Rtn. Dorothy Paul announced the Night of 1,000 Dinners Iowa City held at Johnson Robert A Lee Community Rec Center was a wonderful event that took place Wednesday, March 7th.
Over 65million people have fled their homes and risked their lives in search of refuge. Most are children, but less than half have access to education. The United Nations Association of the United States of America, in tandem with the UN Refugee Agency (UNHCR) and its fundraising arm USA for UNHCR, is working to prevent a lost generation by giving refugee children the education they need to build a better future. Our Club helped to sponsor refugee women’s education. A panel of refugees living in Iowa City spoke about their first-hand experiences at the Kakuma Camp in Kenya, and refugee education.

Rtn. Kelly Hayworth introduced our program speaker, Josh Schamberger, President of Iowa City/Coralville Area Convention & Visitors Bureau since 2001.
PROGRAM:
Josh presented our Club with the 2018 tourism revenue update as well as shared several events to take place in our community this year. Tourism in the state of Iowa is over an $8 billion industry. Travel generated expenditures in Johnson County totaled over 4 million in 2017 and the tourism industry. Johnson County is now the 2nd largest tourism expenditure County behind Polk Co.

Josh described 2018 as a year with several BIG events scheduled to take place. The University of Iowa Athletics, Iowa City/Coralville Area Convention & Visitors Bureau and USA Wrestling are excited to serve as hosts for the 2018 UWW Senior Men’s Freestyle Wrestling World Cup at Carver Hawkeye Arena April 7-8, 2018. Record-setting attendance for the USA Olympic Wrestling Team Trials in 2012 & 2016 and decades of wrestling success on collegiate and international levels has paved the way to bring this incredible event to the best wrestling fans in the world! The US will welcome teams from Cuba, Japan, Georgia, Russia, Iran, Azerbaijan, Kazakhstan. This should be an exciting weekend as we also host the Mission Creek Festival downtown Iowa City as well as the International Literature event.

Josh described the 1st Annual RUN CRANDIC powered by University of Iowa Community Credit Union. Participants will choose the marathon, half marathon or 5K between Cedar Rapids, Iowa and Iowa City, Iowa.
All proceeds will benefit the Cedar Rapids Community School District and Iowa City Community School District. This event will bring 3000 participants to the area from 3 countries and 30 states.

Josh announced The UCI approved the 2018-2019 World Cup calendar for cyclo-cross, with Iowa City's Jingle Cross again kicking off the series in September.  Josh is excited that UCI chose  Jingle Cross as one of the rounds for the Telenet UCI Cyclo-cross World Cup. Over the past 15 years, Jingle Cross has grown into one of the premier cyclo-cross events in the world and it's terrific to have the best riders compete here in Iowa City. It is excellent for the cycling community and the continued growth of cyclo-cross in North America.

A new arena and athlete training center are part of a project that Coralville will build in the Iowa River Landing (IRL), a 180-acre mixed-use development located on Interstate 80 at Exit 242 (1st Avenue). Seating capacity of 6,216. A single full-size sheet of ice will support the University of Iowa Club Hockey Team, the Iowa City-Coralville Hockey Association youth teams, and a possible United States Hockey League. The Arena will have the flexibility to host a multitude of athletic events and tournaments, from wrestling and basketball to indoor football and soccer, in addition to concerts, family shows, and special events.
