Iowa City Noon Rotary Meeting Summary 8/30/18
Our Meeting was called to order by President Steve Quigley
 
Announcements:
Rtn. LaDonna Wicklund, chair of the I Can Read - early literacy project with Sing-a-Long books, CDs and DVDs gifted to local schools shared a thank you note from an excited teacher and child who enjoyed the experience of reading. LaDonna announced the Literacy Champions party at the Buchanans, if not able to attend, please consider making a donation to support this program.
Rtn. Doris Preucil, announced the Musicians Union has a scholarship fundraiser event with Music on Sunday from 2p-7p.  The classical event is at 4p, tickets $10. At the Mill.
Rtn. Barb Thomas, Tippie School of Business is fundraising for  Rotary Youth Leadership Awards and World Affairs Seminar. Sponsorship is $500 per student, will accept any amount.
Barb also announced that she had the opportunity to host Rtn. Don Caltman, of Rotary Club Columbia Northwest while he was participating in Ragbrai. Barb presented Don a flag from our Club and today she presented us with a flag from his club.
Rtn. Jon Brown announced the details for the Club picnic and asked that we RSVP.
Rtn. Verne Folkmann announced for anyone who wants to save a life by giving blood to the Mississippi Valley Blood Center next Tuesday from 11a-2p at the IC Library, no appointment necessary. Expect 20 of us.
The Rotary Foundation recognizes Rtn. Brenda LaMarche as a Paul Harris Fellow (giving at a level of $1000+3). Rtn. John Fraser was acknowledged as a Paul Harris Fellow (giving at a level of $1000+4).
Our Program speaker from last week, John Lohman provided copies of his book, Corridor Rising. Additional copies have been made available for those who did not receive one.
President Elect Board Member elections will happen Sept. 27th. Two Board Members term will end in 2019. New term 2019-2022. Sean McIntyre and Anna Moyers Stone, who may choose to reapply.

Rtn. Eric Weiler announced our Rotary District reviewed 4 proposed ideas for the grant program. The project chose was The Bird House – Hospice Home of Johnson County. Carol Tippe, home coordinator, expressed gratitude to the Iowa City Noon Rotary Club and the Rotary District Match for granting $5000 from the Community Service grant funds for their outdoor projects at The Bird House. We will be finishing many outdoor projects with these funds and the volunteers that will come from Rotary and our community to help.
PROGRAM:
Rtn. Bob Downer introduced Kevin K. Washburn, Dean, College of Law, Kevin Washburn joined Iowa Law as its 18th dean on June 15, 2018.  Most recently he was a Regents Professor of Law at the University of New Mexico School of Law and had served as its dean from June 2009 to October 2012, when he was appointed by President Obama and confirmed by the Senate to be the Assistant Secretary of Indian Affairs as the U.S. Department of the Interior. He served in that role until January of 2016.
 
Washburn is a citizen of the Chickasaw Nation of Oklahoma. He earned a B.A. from the University of Oklahoma and a J.D. from the Yale Law School. Prior to entering academia, he clerked for a judge on the Ninth Circuit, worked as a trial attorney and then a prosecutor with the U.S. Department of Justice, and served as the general counsel of the National Indian Gaming Commission. As an academic, he has held faculty positions at Minnesota and Arizona, and taught for a year as a visitor at Harvard.
Washburn's teaching experience includes criminal law, contracts, property, constitutional law, federal jurisdiction, and administrative law. He has taught and published casebooks in specialty subjects, primarily the law of gaming and gambling and federal Indian law.
Kevin described a powerful mentor, his mother, who is very proud of his accomplishments, one of the greatest though, is speaking at Rotary today!
Kevin has been in Iowa City for 3 months. There are 145 students enrolled in the college of law. 10,500 alumni. 50% of those enrolled are from state of Iowa. 3 are eagle scouts, 1 professional opera singer, there are marathon runners, a zoo keeper, barista, several 1st generation law school students and some 5th generation students.
Kevin believes this new semester has a wonderful class of law students and is off and running.
After audience questions President Steve Quigley thanked Dean Washburn for his presentation.

Rtn. LaDonna Wicklund, chair of the I Can Read - early literacy project with Sing-a-Long books, CDs and DVDs gifted to local schools expressed gratitude to Charlie Funk and Jody Braverman for their grant writing. LaDonna also expressed gratitude to our club in making this program possible. LaDonna announced the Literacy Champions Party at the Buchanan’s on September 13 at 5:30pm. The cost is $25 per ticket, which will be available at the club meeting next week. Please come for Susan Craig’s amazing cheese cake!
  • Rtn. Chris Catney, chair of the Xicotepec, Mexico - multiple school and healthcare projects announced their first committee meeting is today after the club meeting.
Rtn. Aaron Schaefer presented our club with a club flag from Concord, CA.
                                                                                
President Steve Quigley announced on behalf of Treasurer, Neil Quellhorst, that annual club dues are needed by all members by the end of this month.

PROGRAM:

Rtn. Eric Weiler, introduced John Lohman, CEO & Publisher, Corridor Business Journal (Corridor Media Group, Inc.)

 
John described his background that brought him to his decision to start the weekly publication, the Corridor Business Journal in 2004. He is proud of the publication that provides local and regional business news for 12,000-13,000 readers in the Iowa City and Cedar Rapids corridor area. The Corridor Business Journal also executes several events each year, and has published several custom publishing projects. The most recent publishing project is “Corridor Rising”. “Corridor Rising”, is a limited-edition hardcover collector’s book showcasing the devastation and renaissance of our region since the historic floods of 2008. A copy of Corridor Rising was generously made available for each Rotarian. Additional copies may be purchased at Prairie Lights Book Store.
