PROGRAM: Rtn. Jim Conard introduced Marv Cook, local high school football coach at Regina and football player extraordinaire. He's the only person to ever be inducted as both the Iowa High School player of the year and Iowa High School coach of the year. He remains a leading all time leading receiver for the Hawkeyes and was drafted to the Patriots in '89. He also played for the Bears and Rams during his NFL career. He has a daughter, Logan, who is playing as #23 for Iowa women's basketball. He also has a son, Drew, who is playing as #18 for Iowa football. Marv's goal was to share his thoughts on the remaining part of the Iowa Football season. To do so, he also shared his history with the Iowa Football program. He had an early vision of what it would be like to play for Iowa and was recruited after a stellar high school career to play for Iowa. In addition to his continued work in football, he also had the chance to help recruit Kirk Ferentz to Iowa and how he was finally vindicated in his choice after Coach Ferentz's team defeated Michigan State to end a 13 game losing streak. That history set the stage for his take on this season's football team. His first point was that losing to Wisconsin may not make a major difference in the Big 10 conference, if Wisconsin continues to play as erratically as Marv has seen. His second point is that Iowa's strength this season has been its defensive teams. A number of questions followed from the audience, highlighting various elements of Iowa's team this season and the strengths of various players. The greatest area for improvement Marv sees is in Iowa's passing game. Additionally, various questions about high school athletics were asked. One question in particular covered the trade off between specializing and playing multiple sports. Marv leaned towards playing multiple sports - it gives high school students a more complete athletic profiles if they do decide to continue on to collegiate athletics. It also helps avoid the potential negative impacts of overtraining for one sport. President Quigley thanked Marv for his presentation and insights into Iowa's football program. He also shared some of his favorite moments of Marv's career and congratulated him on some really memorable playing. The meeting ended at 1:00 pm as President Steve led the assembly in reciting The Four Way Test. MEETING: Singing: America the Beautiful, Happy Birthday & Smile were led by Rtn. Bob Crane with Rtn. Jim Conard on piano.
