Announcements:

President Quigley shared the results of the recent board elections. Rtn. Barb Thomas is the new president elect. Rtn. Ryan Bell and Rtn. Anna Moyers Stone are new At Large board members who will serve from 2019-2022.

Rtn. Eric Weiler shared that volunteer opportunities are available to help the club complete the sweat equity part of our district grant to the Bird House. The one remaining is from 1-4 PM on October 14 to help with outdoor projects. For more information, contact Pete Muir, Bird House Maintenance Director, at (319) 330-7352 or petemuir1959@gmail.com.

Rtn. Gary Pacha shared that the 5th Ward Saints North program that Carlos Honore presented on last club year has started and needs volunteers to help inspire students in Iowa City to higher personal and academic achievement through sports and mentorship. This is directly related to Rotary International's area of focus on education. To learn about the opportunities to help, talk to Gary for more information.

Rtn. Ryan Bell shared that the trees near the reservoir are growing well following their planting this spring and thanked those Rotarians who assisted in a morning of caring for the trees recently.

President Quigley shared that the local Rotary Leadership Institute will be taking place in November and that the cost for ten of our club's members to attend will be covered. Email Steve if you're interested for more information.

President Quigley also shared that Carol Narek, our district governor's wife, sent a note telling our club she wished she could've been here for Tom's visit. She looks forward to hopefully visiting our club in the future.

One new member, Rtn. Duane Grenier was inducted, sponsored by Steve Hedlund.
PROGRAM:

Rtn. Jim Conard introduced Marv Cook, local high school football coach at Regina and football player extraordinaire. He's the only person to ever be inducted as both the Iowa High School player of the year and Iowa High School coach of the year. He remains a leading all time leading receiver for the Hawkeyes and was drafted to the Patriots in '89. He also played for the Bears and Rams during his NFL career. He has a daughter, Logan, who is playing as #23 for Iowa women's basketball. He also has a son, Drew, who is playing as #18 for Iowa football.

Marv's goal was to share his thoughts on the remaining part of the Iowa Football season. To do so, he also shared his history with the Iowa Football program. He had an early vision of what it would be like to play for Iowa and was recruited after a stellar high school career to play for Iowa. In addition to his continued work in football, he also had the chance to help recruit Kirk Ferentz to Iowa and how he was finally vindicated in his choice after Coach Ferentz's team defeated Michigan State to end a 13 game losing streak.

That history set the stage for his take on this season's football team. His first point was that losing to Wisconsin may not make a major difference in the Big 10 conference, if Wisconsin continues to play as erratically as Marv has seen. His second point is that Iowa's strength this season has been its defensive teams. A number of questions followed from the audience, highlighting various elements of Iowa's team this season and the strengths of various players. The greatest area for improvement Marv sees is in Iowa's passing game.

Additionally, various questions about high school athletics were asked. One question in particular covered the trade off between specializing and playing multiple sports. Marv leaned towards playing multiple sports - it gives high school students a more complete athletic profiles if they do decide to continue on to collegiate athletics. It also helps avoid the potential negative impacts of overtraining for one sport.

President Quigley thanked Marv for his presentation and insights into Iowa's football program. He also shared some of his favorite moments of Marv's career and congratulated him on some really memorable playing.

The meeting ended at 1:00 pm as President Steve led the assembly in reciting The Four Way Test.

MEETING:

Singing: America the Beautiful, Happy Birthday & Smile were led by Rtn. Bob Crane with Rtn. Jim Conard on piano.
