The club and all other service clubs present were welcomed by President Steve Quigley. |
PROGRAM: Rtn. Lynette Marshall introduced the President of the University of Iowa, Bruce Harreld. President Harreld jokingly told the club that he was of the age that he didn't need to be reminded about his birthday this month, so only half appreciated our birthday song. In response to feedback from many presentations such as this one, President Harreld has learned to start with the good news first and then share the challenges to the institution, which he did with passion. Successes: - The athletic department continues to grow in academic success
- Many individual honors, including Iowa's 21st Rhodes Scholar
- The UI is close to filling its major leadership roles again
- New buildings, including the new psychology building, are adding to the impact of the campus
- New programs are meeting student needs, including Computer Science in Engineering and undergraduate degrees in Public Health and Creative Writing
- Innovative ways to inspire first year students through courses that have them seek to answer big questions
Challenges: - Meeting the challenge of matching or bettering the Regents-assigned peer group of institutions while maintaining a more open admissions process, including a commitment to have each admitted class include 20%+ first generation students
The meeting ended at 1:00 pm as President Quigley led the assembly in reciting The Four Way Test. Singing: America the Beautiful and Happy Birthday were led by Rtn. Bob Crane with Rtn. Devin van Holsteijn on piano. Program: Rtn. Tom Cilek; Attendance: Rtn. Nancy Droll
