PROGRAM:
Rtn. Susan Brennan introduced Iowa Associate Basketball Coach, Jan Jensen. Susan described Jan Jensen as the person and picture of who we want leading young people.

Jan endorsed the Iowa Valley Habitat for Humanity Women Build and has participated with the Hawkeye Women’s Basketball team with this project. Jan recommends this as a team building exercise.

Jan shared why she is proud to be coaching for going on 19 seasons. She shared the team mission for this season as: PRIDE
P = Positive Attitude (on and off the court)
R = Respect
I =  Integrity
D = Discipline
E = Everyone Matters

Jan spoke about how each of these values relate to their team. “The voice you hear the most is our own voice and the voice should be positive.” “Respect means we should respect each other and have self-respect.”
-Defining who you want to be. “Integrity is central to the team. Instead of being concerned about other’s integrity, turn that back in to, “how am I doing”? “Have I compromised my integrity? During team recruiting, athletes are asked to be a great role-model, which comes back to integrity. Discipline to do what is right when others aren’t looking. Everyone matters. When competing on a team, there will have a few stand-outs, despite having 15 members on a team, 15 athletes will not get into the game, making a not-so fun for 5 to 6 members of the team. Jan has learned that success comes from the athletes at the end of the bench. They must understand that they add value despite not receiving much attention from media. Jan encourages all to agree that everybody matters.” The Hawkeye Women are Ranked 13th in the country. Coach Bluder has 700 wins. But Jan feels they have already won because she has immense pride for her team. She wants to win, for a couple reasons, she wants to keep her job, because the team works so hard and she wants to win for the community.

The meeting ended at 1:00 pm as President Steve led the assembly in reciting The Four Way Test.

The Club enjoyed singing America the Beautiful, led by Rtn. Bob Crane and Rtn. James Conard on piano.
