PROGRAM:
Rtn. Assata Caldwell introduced Linda Kahlbaugh, co-leader of the Iowa City Chapter of Days for Girls International. Linda started her career as a photo-journalist having worked for the Cedar Rapids Gazette, Time Magazine, The New York Times, USA Today, Newsweek, Associated Press, Chicago Tribune and other publications. Linda’s presentation today is titled, “Days for Girls, Connecting the Dots: Menstrual Hygiene, Health and Social change”. Days for Girls began in 2008 when Founder and CEO Celeste Mergens was working with a family foundation in the outskirts of Nairobi, Kenya where she began assisting an orphanage. In the wake of post-election violence, the population at the orphanage had swelled from 400 children to 1,400. She found girls were not able to go to school or go anywhere during menstruation, instead they were sitting at home on cardboard. The situation is described as Period Poverty. 23% of girls will drop out of school, because they don’t have products to manage their periods. 65% of Kenyan girls in the Kibera slum area report exchanging sex for menstrual pads. The solution: Kits + Health Education. Fabric that can be washed with little water. The products dry easily and without causing embarrassment. Each kit lasts for 3 years, designed to be culturally sensitive. Kits are assembled in 1100 teams with one in Iowa City. Kits are then shipped to where they are needed and distributed by a variety of groups; doctors without borders or other groups, such as Rotary Clubs. In Iowa City, the current needs are materials and supplies, places to sew, storage area, volunteers who wish to sew and share other talents, networking assistance, and distribution help. The meeting ended at 1:00 pm as President Steve led the assembly in reciting The Four Way Test.

The Club enjoyed singing America the Beautiful, Happy Birthday & Smile lead by Rtn. Bob Crane and Rtn. James Conard on piano.
