IC Noon Rotary, 5.31.18
Our Meeting was called to order by President Mike McKay

Announcements:

President McKay let the club know that Rtn. Thais Winckleblack is beginning to recover from her recent serious car crash. She remains at the UI Hospital.

Rtn. Brenda LaMarche announced that the first meeting of the Iowa City Noon Rotary Club at our new location will be on July 12 (with prizes!), following no club meeting on July 5 and our last meeting at the University Club on June 28.

Rtn. Ben Snyder announced that the Iowa City Area Rotary Bike Ride is coming this Saturday - more details here: http://www.bikeiowa.com/Event/12714/iowa-city-area-rotary-bike-ride

Rtn. Christina Kimerle thanked all those who gave wine to the Fore the House Golf Tournament wine auction.

Rtn. Linda Farkas thanked all those involved in making opportunities possible for over 30 students in RYLA and WAS in the coming months.
PROGRAM:
Rtn. Tom Cook introduced Jim Mecir. Jim was born with clubfoot but did not benefit from the Ponseti method - he was diagnosed in the early 70's. Despite that, he became a Major League pitcher - overcoming many challenges along the way and focusing on the strengths he did have. Part of that strength was his ability to throw a screwball (specific pitch, opposite of a curveball) and his determination to prove his doubters wrong. Because of the surgery he received as a young man rather than the non-invasive Ponseti method, Jim lacked strength in his right leg and continues to experience many issues because his legs aren't aligned. He feels blessed to have the opportunities he had but also acknowledged that his life would have been that much better if he had benefited from the Ponseti method. He commended our club for our work to change the current and future lives of children with clubfoot and encouraged us to continue working towards our aspirations.

After audience questions President McKay thanked Jim for his presentation.

The meeting ended at 1:00 pm as President McKay led the assembly in reciting The Four Way Test.
MEETING:

Singing: America the Beautiful & Smile was led by Rtn. Devin van Holsteijn on piano.
