Program:
President Quigley's annual address began with his commitment to support both the ideals of Rotary and the members of this club. He welcomed any feedback a club member wanted to share. He also challenged each member to bring more new members to join our club as Rotarians. The club goal is 40 new members by June 30, 2019 and President Quigley will keep us updated. He also shared that the board voted to match $50 of any new member's $50 commitment to the Rotary Foundation as part of the Every Rotarian Every Year program. His final challenge was for each member to get involved in one project.

President Quigley closed his remarks by asking that each of us focus on fellowship with fellow Rotarians during our meetings by sitting with new people each week and refraining from cell phone use during meetings. He then introduced a number of committee chairs and asked that each of them share opportunities to get involved in projects throughout the year.

Committee Chairs

Rtn. Anna Moyers Stone shared that the Joint Service Club Luncheon is an easy opportunity to serve the club through helping facilitate the annual luncheon, this year taking place in November. Historically, the University of Iowa President has spoken to all service clubs in the Iowa City area at a joint meeting hosted by our club. The time commitment is minimal and there are "a few spreadsheets" involved. For more information, contact Anna.

Rtn.Tom Cilek, program chair (or facilitator, as he prefers to be known), asked that any Rotary member with a program idea come directly to him to turn that idea into action. Because of the need to fill the schedule and still maintain flexibility, timing of any new program idea may take place over the next year, but as long as it fits the clubs goals it will happen.

Rtn. Ryan Bell, sergeant-at-arms, shared that he has two needs. First, any pictures of Rotarians at work in the community can be sent to him to be shared online to give the digital world a better idea of our commitment to service above self. Second, He looks forward to eventually handing off his role as sergeant-at-arms, perhaps after this club year. To become sergeant-at-arms in training, contact Ryan.

Rtn. Linda Farkas, chair of the Youth Leadership Committee, shared that this last year our club award more than $18,000 in scholarships for local high school students to attend RYLA and the World Affairs Institute. Help is needed on the committee for the selection process and in marketing. To get involved, contact Linda.

President Quigley shared that other committee chairs will speak at future meetings to share other opportunities to serve.

Three final announcements were made. First, a door prize was drawn for all members present and Rtn. Jeff Dancer won two tickets to the University of Iowa/Northern Illinois game. Rtn. Trish Smith announced that opportunities to serve the community through volunteering for RAGBRAI were available through the United Way of Johnson and Washington Counties' website. Finally, club members have the opportunity to help our club take home the Golden Turkey in this year's Food Fight, benefiting the Crisis Center of Johnson County. The Rotary club with the greatest pounds of food donated wins the prize and our goal is to wrest the trophy from the reining champions of the past two years, the AM club.

Additionally, Rotary members are invited to join the Mandela Fellows in a day of service on July 18 in the morning. More information and a sign up form can be found here: https://www.iowajpec.org/mandela-day-community-service

The meeting ended at 1:00 pm as President Steve led the assembly in reciting The Four Way Test.

Singing: America the Beautiful and Smile with Rtn. Jim Conard on piano and Rtn. Bob Crane on vocals.

Please forward any newsworthy items and/or photos to Jon Brown or Janice Baldes to include in the weekly slide decks emailed to members prior to each meeting and shown just before Rotary meetings at the Club. You can send information to: Janice Baldes janicebaldes@gmail.com or Jon Brown at mjonBrown@taxesplusiowacity.com
