IC Noon Rotary Mtg Summary 10.18.18
The club was greeted by Rtns. Carlin Parish and Tara Minetos

Our Meeting was called to order by President Steve Quigley.

Announcements:

Rtn. Anna Moyers Stone reminded everyone that the Joint Service Club Luncheon will be Thursday, December 6th at our regular meeting time and location.  To attend, you must purchase a $20 ticket from Anna.
Rtn. Nancy Droll, chairman (and only member) of the Attendance Committee reminded everyone to stay within the lines when you sign in, and also get any attendance makeups to Nancy – please include your name, date, and where you made it up.  She also let the club know that she recently celebrated her 85th birthday and wants at least one other member to join the Committee and help with attendance.

Rtn. Art Nowak, co-chair of the Dictionary Committee reminded Rotarians who expressed an interest in helping with the distribution of dictionaries to contact the Committee if you haven’t heard from them.  Art will reach out to volunteers soon to distribute the dictionaries to our five designated schools.

Rtn. Mary Ellen Lewis presented a flag from the Rotary Club of York, England.  The meeting started at 12:40 PM, immediately after the club met for drinks at the pub, with a non-denominational grace, a formal meal, and a toast to the Queen.  The club has 80-90 members and is just 10% women (another club in York does not allow women at all).  The club was very interested to learn that Paul Harris went to the University of Iowa law school and that Iowa City is a UNESCO City of Literature.

Rtn. Pete Wallace announced that there was a need for scholarships for high school students so that they can travel to work on the Xicotepec project, which costs about $1,850 for the 9 day trip.  The group has begun interviewing the worthy scholarship applicants.  However, there is not enough money raised to fund 3 scholarships.  Please contribute by visiting xicoproject.org.  Click on “Donate” and scroll down and select “Scholarship.”

President Steve Quigley introduced a special guest, the District 600 Governor-Elect, Rtn. Erna Morain.  Erna is a past president of the Waukee club, which has about 65 members.  Erna is originally from Amsterdam, but has been in Iowa for over 30 years now.  She wants to encourage all Rotarians to attend a Rotary International Convention.  This year’s Convention will be in Hamburg, Germany, June 1st through 5th.  There will be over 100 countries present.

Rtn. Eric Weiler announced that there is a critical need for volunteers at the Bird House, Hospice Home of Johnson County.  An estimated 60 volunteers are needed to complete the projects.  Unfortunately, the first work day was rained out, and only two volunteers were present at the second.  Please consider joining the group for some outdoor projects this Sunday, Oct 21, from 1-4 PM.

Goat Rider: Kelsey Foster.

PROGRAM:
Rtn. Chuck Swanson introducted the program.  This year, Hancher has iniated a series known as Club Hancher, which is hosted in Strauss Rehearsal Hall.  160-170 guests can enjoy a drink and food while watching an intimate performance.  Singer, songwriter, actress, and author Storm Large will be performing in the Club tonight.

Storm Large (which is her given name, NOT a stage name) graduated from the American Academy of Dramatic Arts, was a finalist on the Rock Star Supernova series, and toured with Pink Martini.  She has also performed around the world with symphonies, including performances at Carnegie Hall and the Kennedy Center. Her memoir was Oprah’s book of the week and was turned into a sucessful musical.  Storm lives life as a traveling musician, which is hard and means that she’s on the road for 250+ days per year, and has been for the past 25 years.

Storm revealed more about herself through an interview with Chuck.  She had a tumultuous and extremely lonely childhood, growing up with a mentally ill and absent mother and many older brothers.  Storm found that singing and cooking helped sooth the lonliness by bringing others around.  She was gifted with a beautiful voice and while she cannot read music, she learns it by listening.  Storm once learned 10 different songs in 5 different languages in less than 4 days.  She is also an accomplished chef and humanitarian.  For nonprofits in the Portland, Oregon area, she auctions herself off as chef and singer for up to 10 guests.

Storm has a deep appreciation for Hancher, which she says is “built with love and infused like a fine white tea with care in every corner.”  She also thinks very highly of Chuck and his passion and love for Hancher – she definitely made him blush.

Storm closed by singing and playing a haunting and beautiful rendition of Somewhere Over the Rainbow, which she learned from a group of Oregon firefighters.

The meeting ended at 1:00 pm as President Steve led the assembly in reciting The Four Way Test.
