Our second meeting at the Clarion was called to order by Vice President Jim Conard.

The following have been proposed for membership. Please express concerns by Thursday, August 2, 2018.

Rtn. Scott Finlayson announced that the Rotary Picnic is scheduled for September 23. More info to come.

Rtn. Janice Baldes announced Feed My Starving Children will do a meal packaging event at St. Andrew’s Presbyterian Church Sept. 28 and 29. She also needs a forklift if anyone has one she could borrow. She assured the club that a licensed driver will be present to operate it.

Rtn. Jon Brown announced that Rtn. Angelica Vannatta will co-chair the New Member Committee.

Vice President Jim Conard reminded everyone to bring food or financial donations to the next meeting for the Rotary Food Fight. Donations can also be brought directly to The Crisis Center at 1121 Gilbert Ct. Please let volunteers know the donation is for the Iowa City Noon Rotary Club. Last year, the Iowa City AM Club won handily. Vice President Jim hopes our club will step up to give them a run for their money, or rather, golden turkey.

Rtn. John Schneider rode the goat.

PROGRAM:

Rtn. Verne Folkmann introduced Rtn. and Past District Governor Chris Knapp to talk about the Rotary Foundation. Chris is the current chair of the Rotary Foundation for District 6000.

The Rotary Foundation started in 1917 and its first donation was for just $26 from a club in Kansas City. The Foundation has grown to more than $4 billion and has contributed more than $1.7 billion towards the eradication of polio through Rotary International’s Polio Plus program.

Chris explained that 38 years ago, there were 350,000 cases of polio around the world each year. Last year there were just 11 cases. In order to continue vaccinating children and completely eradicate polio, another $1 billion needs to be raised. Currently Afghanistan and Pakistan are the only countries with cases of polio and Nigeria is on the watchlist.

The Rotary Foundation also focuses on local humanitarian efforts through the district grant program and does good in the world through the global grant program. Chris pointed out that many of Rotary’s global projects started right here in the Iowa City Noon Club, including the Ponsetti Club Foot Solutions and the orphanage in Xiocaotapec.

The Foundation has six areas of focus:
  • Peace and Conflict Resolution
  • Disease Prevention and Treatment
  • Water and Sanitation
  • Maternal and Child Health
  • Basic Education and Literacy
  • Economic and Community Development
The money comes from three main sources:
  • Rotarians
  • Our communities
  • Engaging our communities in causes Rotarians support through events
This year, our club’s goals are to raise $45,000 for the Rotary Foundation and $3,000 for Polio Plus.

The meeting ended at 1:00 pm as Vice President Jim led the assembly in reciting The Four Way Test.

Singing: America the Beautiful and Vive Le Rotary were led by Rtn. Bob Crane with RtnDevin van Holsteijn on piano.
