Our Meeting was called to order by Past President Barb Thomas

America the Beautiful and Smile! were sung by Rtn. Bob Crane with Rtn. Devin van Holsteijn on the keyboard

ANNOUNCEMENTS:

Past-President Barb Thomas reminded the Club that we will have another tree planting on October 15th right outside of Big Grove at 9am. Please sign up here: https://www.signupgenius.com/go/20F0E4AA9AF2FA0F58-fall1

Rtn. Linda Farkas shared photos of the students our Club sent to World Affairs Seminar (WAS) from West, City, and Liberty High Schools. Please consider a donation of any amount to support scholarships for these deserving students.

Rtn. Brianna Wills shared that her son’s experience at WAS and RYLA was key to him being selected as a finalist for the Salute to Youth award and receiving a scholarship. The interview skills he gained from these programs really helped him shine and stand out.

Rtn. Tara Minetos thanked the Club for already donating generously to UAY’s Young Parent Program. The in-person supply drive is this Saturday, September 24th from 9am to noon at the North Dodge HyVee. Please join volunteers from the Rotarians Supporting Women committee and help ask shoppers to pick up a few baby items. We can usually pack an entire van in a few hours and help a large of local parents in need.

Rtn. Anna Moyers Stone reminded the Club that October 13th is the Joint Service Club Luncheon here at Big Grove. Tickets must be purchased in advance online: https://www.eventbrite.com/e/joint-service-club-luncheon-tickets-408303646197. Please contact Anna with any questions at aemoyers@gmail.com.

Rtns. LaDonna Wicklund reminded the Club that Thursday, September 29th at 5:30PM, Patty and Dale Roberts are hosting the Literacy Champions Party. The party will help support the I Can Read Program. Kindergarten teachers from 19 schools have requested over 1,000 books. LaDonna shared a heart-felt thank you note from a Kindergarten teacher at Twain. Please purchase a $25 ticket from LaDonna.

Rtn. Chris Peters announced that last weekend’s rain delayed his Rotary service day to help clean Veteran’s headstones (even longer than the Hawkeyes). The cleaning event will now be Saturday, the 24th at Oakland Cemetery at 9am. Reach out to Chris if you’re interested in volunteering.

Rtn. Christy Fehlberg shared that a CareBridge site was created to keep Rtn. Charlie Funk’s friends and social network connected with his progress. Emily Funk posted an update today. Please check it out: https://www.caringbridge.org/visit/charliefunk

New Member Induction: Julia Winter (Sponsor: Patty McCarthy)

PROGRAM:
Rtn. Andre Perry introduced today’s speakers, Travis Kraus and John Engelbrecht, representing Public Space One (PS1). Travis is Co-Treasurer of the Board of PS1 and an Associate Professor of Planning and Public Affairs hat the University of Iowa. John is an artist and the Executive Director of Public Space One.

PS1 is more than just a venue; they are a community of artists. PS1 was founded in 2002 by UI theatre students in the space above the Deadwood. They now have spaces in three historic Iowa City buildings and have a small, mostly parttime, staff of 6 and are mainly volunteer run. PS1 is an artist-led, community-driven, contemporary art center.

PS1 provides an exhibition space for a large range of artists: local, youth, emerging, and national artists. They also lend community gathering space that is centered on creative practice and dialogue and serve as a platform for performances of all types. PS1 also provides resources for the public including art tools, knowledge, and connections.

This weekend PS1 is hosting a 24-hour Art-A-Thon – providing a whole host of events that coincides with the Autumnal Equinox.

PS1 also plays a role in the economic development of the Iowa City community. Arts and culture anchor people to communities and bring them back. They attract employers and talent to the community. PS1 is financially supported by grants, art studio rental income, and memberships.

The meeting ended at 12:57 PM as Past President Barb Thomas led the assembly in reciting The Four Way Test.
