Dance Marathon raises money for children with cancer
Lynette Marshall introduced the program about the University of Iowa Dance Marathon, a student group that has raised more than $14.5 million for children with cancer over the past 20 years. The group’s 21st dance will be Feb. 6. Erin Larsen, executive director, and Katharine Marshall, sponsorship director, shared details about the event. There are 2,475 students registered this year to date. Students are asked to raise $400 to participate. Visit http://dancemarathon.uiowa.edu for more information or to donate.

MEETING
  • The West High 1440 Club announced that members would be selling tickets for its Dance for Humanity after the meeting. The dance will raise money for Habitat for Humanity, and will be held Feb. 15 from 7-9 p.m. Tickets are $10.
  • Jody Braverman mentioned that the club’s 100th anniversary is this year, and a fundraiser will be held on Nov. 5 to commemorate. Plans call for raffling a car, with proceeds to go to the Iowa City, Coralville and North Liberty libraries.
  • Dayna Ballantyne shared that the Newtown Foundation, founded in honor of Charlotte Bacon, one of the children killed in the Sandy Hook school massacre in Connecticut, will honor Willowwind School with an award. Two six-graders from Willowwind will receive the award in Newtown in February.
  • Usha Balakrishnan shared that she sold her first home listing as a new real estate agent. She called Bill Ambrisco and Nancy Droll to the lectern with her, saying their questions of encouragement helped to drive her. To celebrate, she donated $100 to the 100th anniversary effort.
 
Singing: Bob Crane with Jim Conard on the piano led in singing America the Beautiful and Smile, as well as Happy Birthday for January birthdays.
