IC Noon Rotary Mtg Summary 10.31.19
Our meeting was called to order by President Jim Conard
Reminder: There will be no Rotary Club meeting on November 14th, Brown Deer is not able to accommodate us on that date.
President Conard acknowledged the wonderful space, service and warm apple pie provided by Brown Deer Golf Club.
President Conard commented on today’s program and hopes that by sharing the work of international programs, we may be better informed to participate or support the programs.
Rtn. Annie Vanderwerff, Executive Director of Community Health Initiative, Haiti. This non-profit organization leads public and medical health missions, supports economic development and builds infrastructure with the local people of Haiti. Annie and others are working to provide clean water access in Haiti. Their work is executed in 3 phases.
Phase 1 is doing a water survey to find the existing water sources and the amount that is usable.
Phase 2 includes reporting their findings.
Phase 3 is creating a training program.
Once these phases are completed, a new or updated water source is installed which helps with job creation.
Rtn. Ryan Bell thanked those who came to Rotary Grove to plant trees. Mark your calendars for the next opportunity to plant trees on Earth Day in 2020.
Rtn. Tara Minetos, reminded us of the Rotarians Supporting Women Committee Event: Supply Drive for the Teen Parent Program on Saturday, Nov. 2nd, from 9a-1p at the N. Dodge Hy-Vee, supporting United Action for Youth. Please stop by, items needed are formula, diapers of all sizes, wipes, baby food, baby soap, Vaseline and baby hygiene products.
Rtn. Thais Winkleblack, Deb Dunkhase & Rtn. Tom Novak introduced IowaM.O.S.T.  program. (Miles of Smiles Team). IowaM.O.S.T.  program objective: To promote and organize the efforts of District 6000 Rotarians and non-Rotary medical personnel to work with the Rotarians of Huehuetenango, Guatemala, to provide free cleft lip/palate surgery.  This team also works to promote additional health related outreach identified in their community.
Each shared their experiences and a favorite memory from their involvement in the IowaM.O.S.T.  program.
Deb Dunkhase, Chair & Team Leader, applied several times as a non-medical person before she was accepted to participate in a mission trip to Guatemala. Deb’s favorite memory is reconnecting with a child who had surgery a year earlier. Deb witnessed growth in confidence after a successful surgery.
Dr. Tom Novak reports that he gets more than he gives through his experiences with IowaM.O.S.T. He has been to Guatemala 3 times as a pediatrician. Dr. Novak has witnessed teamwork in action.
Dr. John Canady, Medical Chair and plastic surgeon from UI performs cleft lip and palette work. Dr Canady shared that if you help children, you never know what they will become. The surgery has impact on the children’s ability to interact in society. “We’ve watched them blossom and bloom into wonderful people.”
Rtn. Thais Winkleblack, Treasurer, shared her experience as a photo blogger with 2 trips and looks forward to a 3rd upcoming trip. Thais shared that Rotary is about helping others who want to help themselves but may lack resources. “It is great to build a relationship and those you help can count on you to return.”
