Program: Safety and Sustainability in Agriculture presented by Brandi Janssen, PhD at the University of Iowa in the Iowa’s Center for Agricultural Safety and Health. Brandi shared the following statistics; ~21/100,000: rate of fatal farming injuries per year with about 30% of occupational fatalities in Iowa being related to farming and over 100 lost-work-time injuries per day. Injuries fall under the categories of equipment, livestock, grain engulfment and manure pits and injuries in youth. Solutions for prevention include tractor roll-over protection, animal handling equipment, grain bin entry procedures, air quality testing and safe play areas. The Iowa’s Center for Agricultural Safety and Health promotes farm safety through seasonal campaigns, making standards relevant to farmers and convening statewide partners. If you have questions or want to connect with Brandi, send her an email at brandi-janssen@uiowa.edu or visit their website at www.i-cash.org.
