PROGRAM: Rtn. Jim Conard introduced speaker Mark Nolte presenting on Project Better Together.  What are the long-term goals after the immediate needs were met when COVID hit? First, the team recognized we are facing complex, tangled, wicked challenges. They learned about a process through University of Purdue on strategic doing which in turn led to creating the Project Better Together Purpose. Every week the steering committee meet to discuss what is happening and what is coming up.  Buckets identified to work on as a community include: Arts + Culture, Workforce, Mobility + Accessibility, Local Economy, Social Justice, Human Services, Education, Health + Wellbeing, Neighborhoods, and Housing.  A survey and community input helped create a new vision for the area that will ultimately shape future policy and actions. A community-wide Shop Local program to help encourage and motivate local spending at Johnson County local businesses has been launched. Holding Our Own Shop Local programs intends to motivate over $1 million of local spending through showcasing and incentivizing dollars spent.  For more information visit the website at icareatogether.com, sign up for the joint e-newsletter every Monday and attend upcoming joint webinars. Another initiative is the Neighborhood NESTS (Nurturing Every Student Together Safely) – this is safe spaces with trusted adults where children and young adults can gather for academic success and emotional wellbeing this school year. Questions about this program should be directed to Jennifer Banta jennifer@iowacityarea.com. What can Rotarians do? Shop and support local businesses. Sign up to volunteer at icareatogether.com/project-better-together/. Volunteer for a NEST / contribute through Community Foundation of Johnson County. Share ideas: markanolte@gmail.com
