Rotary Minutes 10.22.2020

Just prior to noon, we went into Zoom breakout groups to be able to chat in small groups as though we were at a table with 6 or so fellow Rotarians and guests.
 
Our Meeting was called to order by President Barb Thomas.

Announcements:
Rtn. Eric Weiler announced that One Rotary Summit is tonight at 6:30 pm. The agenda includes, opening comments on the state of rotary by DG Steve Dakin, innovative clubs, inclusion & diversity and public image. Rtn. Ryan Bell will be presenting on public image. Rtn. Ryan Bell shared that our first highway cleanup day was a success. He thanked everyone for coming out and gave a shoutout to Rtn. Joe Hughes’ kids, who were rockstart helpers!!!
 
Rtn. John Fraser shared that Operation Warm - Giving Coats is still receiving donations until Monday, November 30th. $20 will buy one coat, you can donate any amount online: https://secure.givelively.org/donate/operation-warm-inc/join-iowa-city-noon-rotary-to-give-coats-to-kids-in-need or checks can be made out to Operation Warm, PO Box 822431, Philadelphia, PA 19182-2431.  Please make sure to add a note that shows our club name. All donations will receive a tax receipt.
 
Rtn. Kelly Stobb announced that we will be partnering with Maggie’s Farm Wood-Fired Pizza on Saturday, October 24th, which is World Polio Day. They are donating 10% of all proceeds to Rotary’s Polio Plus Program. So get your pizza ordered for the first Hawkeyes football game!
 
President Barb Thomas announced with the new rotary year in July, dues are due. If you have not paid your dues, membership will be terminated on Monday, October 26th. please reach out to your fellow members to make sure they paid their dues. It is these dues that help us continue to do good in our community!!
 
Rtn. Anna Moyers Stone announced the United Way Power of the Purse event next Thursday, Oct 29th . Rtn. Anna Moyers Stone and Rtn. Ryan Bell will be MC’ing, you do not want to miss this. Buy a ticket and start your Holiday shopping: https://www.unitedwayjwc.org/power-purse-2020 !
 
Rtn. Patty McCarthy shared a moment of gratitude and positivity. She is grateful for words in music and books. Lately her playlist has included a lot of the Beatles,  “Let it be” and Bruce Springsteen, “The Rising.” A few books she has read lately that have given her solice and encouragement: Beer Money, a Tale of Iowa City's Beer Mafia by SC Sherman, 50-plus African American Women who Changed the World by Cheryl Willis Hudson, The Ones We've Been Waiting For: How a New Generation of Leaders will Transform America by Charlotte Alter and The Paragon Hotel by Lyndsay Faye
 
PROGRAM: Iowa Big, Driving Deep Learning Through Real Work
 
Rtn. Janice Baldes introduced Dr.Trace Pickering, Co-founder and Excutive Director of Iowa Big.  
 
Dr. Trace Pickering shared about the Cedar Rapids school, Iowa Big and their vision to unleash human potential in local high schoolers. Iowa Big have students for a half a day, during which the students earn core credits: English, Social Studies, Math and Science as well as Business. The students choose the projects they want to be involved in, the students then engage with local business and community partners and they work together to create solutions. Teachers then provide the content to ensure the students are learning the Core and 21st century standards. Iowa Big’s goal is for sudents to see and experience how these dicsiplines interact and work in-context.
 
Dr. Trace Pickering introduced students, Leah Ahlers and Ethan Mayers, who shared their experience with Iowa Big.
 
The meeting ended at 1:00 PM as President Barb Thomas led the assembly in reciting The Four Way Test.
