Our Meeting was called to order by President Barb Thomas.

ANNOUNCEMENTS:
Rtn. Ryan Bell announced that the trees at Rotary Grove are looking great – see the photo in the before meeting slides.  Another planting is planned for this Spring.

Rtn. Anna Moyers Stone announced that the Joint Service Club luncheon is still happening, but there are no tickets this year.  On Thursday, November 12th, you just follow our regular Zoom link for Rotary meetings.  President Bruce Herrrrrald will be speaking.  Feel free to share the link with any guests.

Rtn. John Fraser provided an update on Operation Warm.  Our Club has paid for, purchased, and shipped 108 coats for children.  The program runs through November, but if you’d like to donate, please do so sooner rather than later, as it’s getting cold.  You can donate here: https://secure.givelively.org/donate/operation-warm-inc/join-iowa-city-noon-rotary-to-give-coats-to-kids-in-need

Rtn. Tara Minetos read a thank you note addressed to our Club from one of this year’s Rotarians Supporting Women scholarship recipients.  Our Club was able to generously fund a second scholarship for this amazing student.  Sushma Santhana is pursuing a degree in biomedical engineering at the Univeristy of Iowa so she can pursue her dream of making medical devices for children with disabilities

The Rotary Moment of Gratitude and Positivity was delivered by Rtn. Kelley Drowne.  During these challenging times, Kelley is reminded that life isn’t fair.  She lost her father to suicide at age 7, but she is grateful for what she learned from that.  This experience taught her coping skills and how to focus the things in her life to be grateful for.  She is currently trying to instill these coping skills in her four daughters.  Her inspirational moment is worth a second listen.

Presdient Barb Thomas reminded the Club that we were able to partner with the Community Foundation of Johnson County to help fund local organizations.  She introduced Barbara Vinograde, director of the Iowa City Free Medical and Dental Clinic, one of the recipients of funds.  Barbara delivered her most sincere thanks for our generous funding of the Free Clinic’s work.  The Clinic has operated since 1971 and is one of the oldest free clinics in the country.

Rtn. Shelly Maharry  announced that the Community Foundation of Johnson County will be having a virtual celebration of the awarding of Community Recovery and Nonprofit Support Grants at 11AM tomorrow.  Our Club will be recognized.  The link to register for the link: https://us02web.zoom.us/meeting/register/tZElduyhqjovEtH_fiP-4M6wqgPG6Knq-nd7

PROGRAM:
President Barb Thomas introduced today’s speaker, Doug Alberhasky.  He is the 7th generation of his family to live in Iowa City and the 3rd generation to own John’s Grocery.  He is a gradudate of Iowa City High and Kirkwood Community College.  Doug started working at John’s Grocer 50 years ago, at age 6.

Iowa City was founded in 1839 and was designed to mimic the grid layout of Washington, DC.  A dry goods store was founded in 1848 in the space where John’s Grocery is today.  There has been a grocery store at that location for 172 years.  A fun fact - at the time of the store’s founding, Iowa City had 3 breweries and 40 bars for a population of 7,000 people.

Doug’s grandfather was one of seven children, who were born and raised on the Northside.  John’s brothers owned other pubs and tap houses in Iowa City, including Bernie’s Fox Head Tavern.  Doug’s grandfather, John Alberhasky served in the US Navy during WWII, but was never shipped out of Hawaii.  He worked odd jobs and earned enough to purchase the grocery store.  John’s Grocery was established in 1948.  The family rule was that you were hired as soon as you could see over the counter.  The family worked there 7 days a week, 365 days per year.

The name Dirty John’s comes from a story surrounding it being the first store in the area to sell Playboy Magazine.  When the magazines were delivered one day, some junior high boys took them and distributed them until they were caught by the wrestling coach.  Thinking John sold the magazines to junior high boys, he called him Dirty John.

They’re also the King of Bier and started the Iowa City Brewfest in 1996.  The Northside Oktoberfest was started in 2011, returning beer home to the Northside, with all the proceeds going to charity.  John’s Grocery are the last remaining family owned grocery store in Iowa City and they’re so grateful for the support of our community.

The meeting ended at 1 PM as President Barb Thomas led the assembly in reciting The Four Way Test.
