IC Noon Rotary, 6.6.19
The club was greeted by Rtn. Assata Caldwell

Our Meeting was called to order by President Steve Quigley

Announcements:

President Steve Quigley asked the club to observe two moments of silence today.  The Club honored Fredrick “Jack” Newman, a member of our Club since 1967, who passed away on June 5th, at age 99.  Today is also the 75th anniversary of D-Day in Normandy, France.  A moment of silence was observed to honor the 9,000 soldiers who died during that battle and all the living WWII veterans.

Rtn. Dick Huber, President of the Iowa City AM Rotary Club promoted the Rotary Bike Ride Fundraiser.  This is a partnership between the IC AM, IC Downtown, IC Noon, and Coralville North Corridor Rotary Clubs.  The ride and walk (walkers are welcome) will take place at Terry Trueblood on June 15th from 9-1.  Registration includes lunch (served at 11AM) and a free neck gaitor.

Rtn. Brad Baldes announced that the 18th annual Ronald McDonald House golf tournament was a success.  There was great weather and a good turnout and he thanks the Club for its participation.  Financials will be announced soon.

President Steve Quigley announced that the Board unanimously approved Sean McIntyre to complete Barb Thomas’s remaining one year term as a board member.  Steve also reminded the group that dues statements have gone out and the Club would like to have all dues collected by July 1.

President-Elect Jim Conard made the 2019-20 Facility Announcement.  Extensive research was done again and in order to accommodate the size of our group and the atmosphere our members and guests would appreciate, the following sites were selected:
            July-September: Big Grove Brewery
            October-March: Brown Deer Golf Course
            April- June: Big Grove Brewery
Steve will send out additional information to all members.  Please note that Big Grove will have adequate parking, including 27 spots close to one of the doors reserved specifically for Rotarians who need to be close to the entrance.  Both locations take great pride in their food quality and will have special events (grill outs, beer sampling, tours, special speakers, etc) to help attract guests and new members.
PROGRAM:
Rtn. Patty McCarthy first thanked the Club’s members for supporting the Library, and then introduced today’s speaker, Elsworth Carman, Director of the Iowa City Public Library.  Elsworth started his new role in January, coming most recently from Marion.  He also served libraries in New Jersey and the District of Columbia.  Elsworth grew up in Madison, Wisconsin, so he is very familiar with the needs of college communities.

Elsworth discussed various programs at the Library:
Summer Reading Program: Currently has enrolled 671 adults, 199 teens, 1,157 kids, and 212 babies.  This number will continue to grow throughout the summer.

Discovery Kits: Now available for checkout and include curated collections of items to try out without investing in materials (current offerings include ukulele, astronomy, and bike tool kits, among others).

Technology Assistance: One-on-one tech support is avaible by appointment and at regular drop-in times each week.  There is also a Senior Tech Zone each week.  This assistance is free and open to everyone.  A Digital Media Lab is also available, where staff can help you learn new programs and equipment (photo scanning, video editing, game development, etc).

Digital Library: The Library is working to make materials more accessible and has services available to stream movies and audiobooks.  Card holders can also access digital magazine and newspaper subscriptions.  Library staff is also diligently updating the Local History Project with info and new materials.

Lobby Stop Service: This program is in its pilot stage, taking a small curated collections of materials to senior living facilities and other group environments.  The Library can also provide Materials by Mail to residents who cannot otherwise access the library.  This service is free to the users.

Book Mobile: Careful decisions are being made to bring the Library to the places and people that need them most.

Fine-Free Children & Teen Materials: The Library is proud to announce the end of fines for overdue children and teen materials, which is a regional and national trend.  Evidence indicates that fine balances as low as $5-10 keep families away from the library.  Removing the fines takes away the barrier.

Elsworth encourages you to stop or call the Library or him with any questions or to access resources.

The meeting ended at 1:00 pm as  President Steve Quigley led the assembly in reciting The Four Way Test.

MEETING:
Singing: America the Beautiful, Happy Birthday, and Smile were led by Rtn. Bob Crane and Aaron Schaefer with Rtn. Jim Conard on piano.

Rtn. Assata Caldwell announced visiting Rotarian Dick Huber (Iowa City AM).

Guests of Rotarians: Aida Mengistu (Usha Balakrishnan); Heather Croskrey (Shawn Reineke); Elsworth Carman (Patty McCarthy); Mary Rettig (John Culshaw); Rebecca Neades (Steve Quigley); Kevin Wormwood (Steve Quigley).

Program: Tom Cilek; Attendance: Nancy Droll

The Mandela Washington Fellowship for Young African Leaders, started in 2014, is the flagship program of President Obama’s Young African Leaders Initiative (YALI) that empowers young African people through academic coursework, leadership training, and networking. The University of Iowa Fellowship Program is possible through the Institute for International Business (IIB), a partnership of the University of Iowa John Pappajohn Entrepreneurial Center (Iowa JPEC) and the Tippie College of Business. The Fellows have established records of accomplishment in promoting innovation and positive change in their organizations, institutions, communities, and countries. The YALI Network provides members with invaluable opportunities to connect with other leaders in their community and learn from experts in their field. Please see Dimy for more information.

Ronald McDonald Development Director, Heather Croskrey, is requesting 10 additional volunteers for the Fore the Families Golf Outing, supporting the Ronald McDonald House on June 3rd. Thanks to those who donated wine today, Heather will be here next week for additional wine donations.
PROGRAM:

Rtn. Herb Wilson introduced program speaker: Professor & Rtn. Tom Cook. Tom, a professor of Public Health, Physical Therapy & Rehabilitation Science, International Studies, & Bioinformatics at the University of Iowa since 1981. Tom earned his Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) Human Factors Engineering from the University of Iowa in 1987. Tom is the director of global operations for the UI-based Ponseti International Association and helped to create the Rotarian Action Group for Clubfoot group.

Tom Cook described the frequency of the clubfoot birth defect. About 200 children each year are diagnosed with Club Foot. Clubfoot is a problem with muscles in the lower leg, found more often in males. “What does not cause club foot? A lunar eclipse, curse from an ancestor, or the polio vaccine. Surgery is not the long-term solution to clubfoot. If treated by surgery, by the age of 20 years, the patient will be severely disabled without additional surgeries.”

“What fixes Club Foot? Dr Ignacio V. Ponseti’s treatment, now branded as the Ponseti technique or orthodontics for the foot. Using braces as a gentle manipulation to straighten the foot. After 10 days, the foot is stretched and positioned again. This is repeated 4-5 times over a 5-week period. Allows bones to reshape and realign. The genetic code is still there, when at rest, the foot wants to relapse. “Sleepy Shoes” with a bar must be worn at night to prevent the deformity from returning.”

A world without clubfoot disability requires 4000 trained in clubfoot treatment. Training requires a great deal of skill especially when working with a 10-day old infant. Dr. Ponseti described the work as playing the piano, knowing and feeling each bone.

World Clubfoot Dy is June 3rd, Dr. Ponseti’s birthday. Parents of clubfoot kids are big users of the Ronald McDonald House, who is hosting a golf outing on this very day. 100 patients each year come from outside of Iowa to be treated at the University of Iowa Hospitals & Clinics.
Bracing with quality products is a global problem. The Iowa Brace has been created at the University of Iowa. A local Coralville company, Clubfoot Solutions manufactures and distributes, a high quality, yet affordable brace.

Rotarian Action Group (RAG) for Clubfoot are collections of Rotarians that have a common cause. Clubfoot RAG’s formed in 2015 to connect, address the problem and identify resources. The RAG board developed the Iowa’s Gift to the Children of the World fundraising program. Thanks to John & Ellen Buchanan for their generous donations to this program.

What can Rotarians do to help?
  • Support the training of healthcare professionals to apply the Ponseti Method.
  • Assist with public awareness to reduce the stigma of clubfoot.
  • Promote early referral.
  • Assist families and caregivers.
  • Assist with the provision of braces.

2 million kids in the next 10 years will be born with clubfoot. The goal is to provide treatment to 100% of those who need it. For more information & how to help:
