PROGRAM:
Rtn. Andrea Rhoades introduced program speaker: Don Rhoades, Veteran Employment Specialist with the University of Iowa. Don has been a champion for Veterans for over 30 years. Don works at the Department of Veteran Affairs in job development and placement of Veterans after they return from deployment. His work includes vocational rehabilitation, hiring, training and working with other rehabilitation counselors who do the same. Don helps Veterans with the transition from active duty to being students at the University of Iowa. Don discussed the features and benefits and eligibility requirements for the Post-9/11 GI Bill and the VR&E Program (Vocational Rehabilitation and Employment Services). The challenges are making Veterans and employers aware of these tremendous services.

  1. Post-9/11 GI Bill
    1. Don explained that eligible Veterans have at least 90 days of aggregate active duty service after Sept. 10, 2001, and are still on active duty, or if are an honorably discharged Veteran or were discharged with a service-connected disability after 30 days, they may be eligible for this VA-administered program.
    2. 100% of college tuition is paid for 36 months
    3. Pays the Veteran to go to school
    4. Yellow Ribbon Program – This program will pay Veterans resident tuition & fees for a public school and the lower of the actual tuition & fees or the national maximum per academic year for a private school.

  1. VR&E Program, Vocational Rehabilitation & Employment Services for Veterans
    1. Don explained that Veterans may receive services to help with job training, employment accommodations, resume development, and job seeking skills coaching. Other services may be provided to assist Veterans and Servicemembers in starting their own businesses or independent living services for those who are severely disabled and unable to work in traditional employment.
    2. VA's Education and Career Counseling program is a great opportunity for Veterans and Servicemembers to get personalized counseling and support to help guide their career paths, ensure the most effective use of their VA benefits, and achieve their goals.

The meeting ended at 1:00 pm as President-Elect Jim led the assembly in reciting The Four Way Test.

The Club enjoyed singing America the Beautiful, led by Rtn. Bob Crane with Rtn. Devin Holsteijn on piano.
