New Member Induction: Mary Rettig (John Culshaw); Johnathan Brinson (Ryan Bell).

PROGRAM:
Rtn. John Culshaw introduced today’s speaker, Derek Johnson.  When asked about the University of Iowa libraries, most people think of the main library on Burlington St, but there are actually 7 libraries across campus.  The goal of the University of Iowa Medical Library is to improve health by improving access to healthcare information.  Derek joined UI in 2016 after working for Line of Sight in Coralville and the University of Minnesota libraries.

Derek introduced the National Network of Libraries of Medicine (NNLM) and its history.  In the 1960s, a State of Medical School Libraries found that such libraries were “woefully inadequate”and unable to support medical students.  The report recommended the creation of this Network, which was authorized in 1965.  A lot has changed since then, but the NNLM’s role remains to ensure access to biomedical research for medical students and practitioners and reliable health information for the general public.

In 2016, the University of Iowa Medical School Library was designated as the Greater Midwest Region Medical Library and awarded a $6.5 million, 5 year grant.  This makes the UI library one of only 8 such regional libraries in the United States.  The Greater Midwest Region includes the Dakotas and down across to Ohio and Kentcky, serving 10 states.  In its role as a regional medical library, it focuses on 3 main initiatives:

Training & Education – The medical school library is staffed with medical librarians who focus on providing research and training to public librarians to help them serve their populations.  The librarians also serve health sciences students and health care professionals (providers and public health workforce).

Funding & Outreach – Since 2016, $1.8 million has been awarded to organizations across the Greater Midwest Region.  Examples include community outreach and health and wellness training workshops for Latinos in rural Minnesota; digital health literacy instruction in Wisconsin; and document delivery and the establishment of the Public Health Research Center for Iowa, based in Waterloo.

Membership & Engagement – Over 8,000 libraries nationwide are a member of the NNLM and membership helps connect them to materials and each other.

The meeting ended at 1:00 PM as President Jim Conard led the assembly in reciting The Four Way Test.
